Solar panels and roofing are two of the biggest purchases a homeowner makes, and they share the same real estate. Sequence them badly and you pay twice for the same scaffolding.

The roof always goes first

Panels last for a very long time and so do the mounting systems beneath them. If your shingles have reached the end of their service life, replacing them before the panels go up costs far less than removing and reinstalling an array later. Ask any installer the cost of a lift-and-replace and the answer will settle the argument.

Inspect the whole roof, not just the sunny side

An array only covers part of the roof, but water is patient. We check flashing around chimneys and vents, the condition of valleys and the state of the gutters. A small repair now is cheaper than a ceiling repair later.

What the inspection looks at

  • Shingle age and granular loss across every elevation.
  • Flashing and sealant around penetrations, skylights and chimneys.
  • Decking condition and any soft spots underfoot.
  • Attic ventilation and insulation, since heat affects panel efficiency.

Then think about the sun and your usage

Shading from trees and neighbouring buildings changes through the year, so we look at the roof in different seasons rather than at a single moment. Then we compare that with the way your household uses electricity — an electric vehicle, a heat pump or a home office shifts the numbers considerably.

Design the array around your household, not around the roof area. Filling every spare inch is rarely the best value.

Ventilation is quietly doing the work

A hot attic makes the rooms below hotter and the panels above less efficient. Ridge vents, soffit vents and balanced intake air are unglamorous improvements with an outsized effect on comfort and energy use.

Coordinate the paperwork once

Utility interconnection, permits and warranty registration all need the same information. Handling roof and solar as a single project means one set of documents, one point of contact and one date when the work is finished.

Where we can help

We assess the roof, plan the upgrade and coordinate the solar installation as one project, so nothing is installed on top of a problem.
